MiniMed Flex pump
MiniMed
What it is
MiniMed's FDA-cleared, screenless, smartphone-controlled tubed pump: about half the size of the 780G, with app bolusing, a 300-unit reservoir, rechargeable battery lasting at least seven days, waterproofing and Simplera Sync compatibility (battery-life, waterproofing and size-comparison specifics as described on this page, beyond the fetched product wording). US commercial launch began on 17 June 2026.

Evidence behind this assessment
Key evidence notes. Study results, product eligibility and access answer different questions.
- Who was studied?
- Study populations and analysis groups vary. Product age limits alone do not describe who was studied.
- Benefit or performance
- Reliability: FDA-cleared and built on MiniMed's mature pump/SmartGuard lineage (lineage as described on this page), but the Flex hardware itself lacks long real-world track record.[2]
- Important harms and treatment burden
- Read the safety discussion and original sources. A missing summary does not establish safety.
- Approval and country access
- US commercial launch began June 2026; not yet available outside the USApproval, trial recruitment, local supply and funding are separate. Check the cited label or access source.
- Follow-up and remaining uncertainty
- Read the full discussion and original sources for follow-up duration and study limitations.

Editorial score: calculation and evidence
A weighted editorial judgment on a 0–100 scale, not a probability of success or a measured treatment effect. Higher criterion scores mean more favorable assessments.
Default calculation: 55 × 20 + 65 × 20 + 70 × 20 + 92 × 15 + 78 × 10 + 64 × 15 = 6920; divide by total weight 100. Unrounded weighted result: 69.2.
US launch began with Simplera Sync; MiniMed started commercially shipping Flex with the Abbott-built Instinct sensor on 17 August 2026, as reported in the cited MiniMed release (release body not re-read in-session). Still a closed MiniMed ecosystem rather than an open pump.[6]
FDA-cleared and built on MiniMed's mature pump/SmartGuard lineage (lineage as described on this page), but the Flex hardware itself lacks long real-world track record.[2]
Small and screenless, about half the 780G form factor, but still a tubed pump rather than a patch pump.[2]
Designed around MiniMed app control, including meal and correction boluses from a compatible device.[1]
300-unit reservoir and a rechargeable battery lasting at least seven days (battery endurance as described on this page, not in the fetched product wording) are strong for a compact pump; it also works with MiniMed's Extended infusion set, worn up to seven days.[4]
US commercial launch began on 17 June 2026, following March 2026 FDA clearance (type 1 diabetes from age 7, and adults 18+ with insulin-requiring type 2). Medicare and Medicare Advantage access began on 22 July; ex-US availability is still ahead.[5]
The full picture
MiniMed Flex is the hardware shift in MiniMed's next generation: a screenless tubed pump controlled through the MiniMed app. It preserves the 300-unit capacity and MiniMed infusion-set ecosystem while shrinking the pump and moving bolusing to the phone. Its ranking is deliberately split from the AID-system page: this pump score is about hardware access, form factor and interoperability; the AID page covers SmartGuard automation and the GATEWAY no-meal-bolus signal.
It is now actually shipping
Flex has moved from "cleared" to "on sale". MiniMed announced the start of its first US commercial launch on 17 June 2026, following FDA clearance in March 2026.4 It is indicated for type 1 diabetes from age 7, and for adults 18 and over with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes. The pump launches with the Simplera Sync sensor, has no screen (control is entirely through the MiniMed app on iOS or Android from day one), holds 300 units, and works with MiniMed's infusion sets — including the Extended set, worn for up to seven days.4 That is why the access score moves up: this is a product you can be prescribed today rather than a clearance you are waiting on. It is still a US-only launch, and payer coverage is only starting to fall into place, which is what keeps the score in the middle of the range rather than near the top.
On 22 July 2026, MiniMed expanded US access to Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.5 On 17 August 2026 MiniMed announced that Flex is commercially shipping in the US with Instinct, so customers can now order Flex with Instinct or Simplera Sync; existing Flex users need MiniMed app 1.3.1 plus a pump-software update to pair Instinct (version and update specifics as given in the cited 17 August release, not re-verified in-session).6 Shipping is not Flex-specific outcome data. European CE marking was announced on 1 September 2026, with commercial launch targeted November 2026.8
September regulatory update. Flex has received CE marking, with European launch targeted November 2026. US commercial availability does not imply that European sales have begun.8
